How and Where to Look for Help to Pay Utility Bills (Electric, Gas, Water)
Keeping the lights on, the air conditioner and heater working, and the water running are necessities for survival in today’s world.
But with rising energy costs and increasing job losses and layoffs, more and more people are finding it difficult to pay their electric, gas, and water bills.
If you are in a situation where you need help paying these bills, there are charities and organizations that are providing assistance to people just like you.
First, call your utility company.
- Ask if they have an assistance program, a discount program or if you can set up a payment plan.
- Be sure to let them know if you have an ill or elderly person or small children in the house. This may give you priority consideration.
Contact NEAR (National Energy Assistance Referral Project)
- They provide financial assistance towards a household’s energy bill, emergency assistance if a household’s home energy service is shut off or about to be shut off and give priority to those with a young child, disabled person, or frail older individual.
- You can call them at 1-866-674-6327 8:00 am – 6:00 pm EST.
- They can give you information for local and state LIHEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program) agencies in your area
Contact your local Community Action Agency (CAA)
- The service areas of Community Action Agencies (CAAs) cover 96 percent of the nation’s counties.
- Because each Community Action Agency is governed locally, each provides a different mix of services.

4. Contact the local agency.
Contact a church close to you.
- If you belong to a church, call and ask about funds they may have set aside to help members.
- Many Catholic Churches try to help anyone in need in their parish area. If they cannot help, ask them for the phone number for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in your area and the number for the local Catholic Charities.
Contact your city or county Housing Authority.
- In many areas they are conducting a Homeless Prevention Program.
- They may pay up to 3 months rent and utilities.

the 1-866-674-6327 number listed above is a scam and will tell you that the number has changed and to hit 2 to get a text sent to you with information on the new number. It then tells you that you will be chared $9.99 for message and data rates (which you obviously don’t have if you are on here looking for help) I tried to reply with “stop” so that I wouldn’t be chared, and it will not accept the message. I called my mobile company to stop the charges. What a scam this stuff is. Trying to steal from the poor!!
I too am in a bad position. I have worked foe 20 years and the past 13 I have raised all 6 of my children alone.There father was murdered. I took a buy out and am in College, but my counslor did nothing to help me with appropriate requirements. I am not aware of any charities or organizations that are able to pay all bills for people on an ongoing basis.
Please remember that charities get donations from people who are also struggling but who are willing to share what they can to help others.
Americans are a very giving and generous people. Most communities have pantries with clothing and food. Check with any church close to you to find where they are in your area.

Check out the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Community Action Agency in your area for help with school clothes.
Also, most communities have places where you can get clothes. Ask any church in your area if they know of places close to you.
but the ? is… how can u help yourself? ii’ve never ask for money… but i need to be pointed in the direction to get some help. but all the agencies they only want to help ppl that don’t work, don’t pay bills, or don’t pay taxes. the ones that think that they deserve or entiltied to everything. & i know that everyone knows who i’m talking about. ones that walk into walmart with a foodstamp card, has lot of kids, & buy nothing but damn snacks. & they wonder why their kids are so un-healthy. but their are a lot of us that have done things by the book. we grew up… went to college… got a job… pay bills… pay taxes… start a family during all of that… & still can’t get any help. this country is going to fall apart if the idoit gets re-elected. so… the ? again is how or where or what agencies can we go to & not get turn away? rejected??

It is frustrating and discouraging when it seems like those who do nothing but milk “the system” get benefits and those who try to be self-sufficient and responsible are denied. Some people just seem to feel entitled to use other people’s hard earned money to pay their bills for them.
But many charities are trying to help out. Be sure to contact the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul in your area. They will do all they can to help you, and without all the bureaucratic red tape and mountains of eligibility requirements. Their mission is to help anyone in need.
Call a Catholic Church close to you (you do NOT need to be Catholic to get help) and ask them for the number for a local Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
These are volunteers who donate their time, money and prayers to help good people who need assistance.
Since they are volunteers, there is likely not a published phone number, which is why you will need to call a Catholic Church. They will know if there is one in your area.
If there is not a local group close to you, contact the national headquarters (Go to http://www.SVDPUSA.org) They may be able to help you find another Conference that can help. They help each other out when they can. Remember, their mission is to help people in need and they will do all they can to help you.
Also be sure to check with Catholic Charities in your area. Again, you do NOT need to be Catholic to get help. Any Catholic church close to you can also give you the number for a local Catholic Charities office.
Also ask the churches in your area for referrals to other community resources. Many times there are agencies and organizations that the government agencies and 211 may not be aware of.
